Sketchbook #1

Just some random things from my sketchbook. I haven't had much time to draw recently :( By the end of next month I will have a lot more time :) I really want to join a life drawing class, but I can't seem to find one in my area. When the sun shines a bit more I am planning to go to the park and draw people there :) should be fun!

Will update with Little Leap Forward work soon. ^-^

Koji Yamamura

Koji Yamamura

Atama Yama (Mt Head) 2002

Ame no hi (Imagination) 1993

Toshi wo totta wani (The Old Crocodile) 2005

I first came across Koji's animation during my art foundation in the book 'Animation Now!' where his film Mt. Head was featured on the DVD which came with the book. I thought it was great which is why I was really happy to hear he would be attending the Norwich International Animation Festival 2006.

It was during my second year of uni and I was working as a volunteer at the festival. There was a screening of his films which was great as I was able to see a full collection of his work on the big screen. My favourites being Mt Head, The Old Crocodile and the shorts featuring the two claymation characters Karo and Piyobupt. Afterwards I was lucky enough to meet him and my friend and I got a signed drawing from him. I am so glad we went to talk to him it was really cool to be able to meet someone whos work I really admired.
I really love his films and if you haven't seen them before I really recommend you check them out. I have included links below the images above.

AnnaTheRed's Bento Factory

This is possibly my favourite food related blog <3 My obsession with bento boxes brought me to this site and I absolutly love everything this girl makes!
She has tons of Ghibli and game related bentos. My favourite being the Sleeping Totoro. So cute ^-^

I also love her Wall-E and Totoro sandwiches which I am planning on attempting to make with my friends kid next week. He is very excited about it all... almost as excited as me. :) I also want to attempt to make her Doraemon onigiri... although my last attempt at onigiri didn't go too well.

She is so creative with her food it is amazing. Plus she made a Battlestar Galactica themed feast for the season finale... this is the main reason I am blogging about this today. The three post special on BSG themed food was brilliant.

You must check out the rest of her bentos *Go Go Go*

Bird Progress

So I have been struggling with the birds the last few days and I thought I figured out how I was going to add the details to the wings and then realised that it wouldn't work that way etc. etc.
So I spend most my time today hunting down free softwares. I actually came across quite a few open source 2D animation software. I will probably write about them another time as they all looked rather promising.

Eventually I came up with another way to add the detailed wings... It wasn't the way I originally planned to do it but it looks okay so far. I think that with a bit of clean up and tweaking it will look fine. Here is a screenshot from what I've been working on today.

I think I am on schedule with Little Leap Forward :) Should have the whole thing finished in a couple of weeks time. I am really looking forward to seeing it intergrated into the final production. ^-^

Apart from that I haven't been up to much else really. I am planning a re-design of my website in the next few months though which will be very fun. :) The last version was put together in a bit of a rush before my grad show so I am really looking forward to be able to just sit down and design. I will also be re-decorating my bedroom / studio starting in May. It's pretty cramped at the minute with minimal storage so a fresh start will be nice :) It's all about the changes right now, very exciting! :)

Willow and Scraps...

My auntie bought me a Willow Pattern mug! :) I am so pleased with it! It is my first piece of Willow Pattern so I thought I would share. ^-^

I have had a fairly busy weekend at work and have been feeling quite tired. I did however find time to start making my scrapbook. I was fed up of tearing pictures I liked from magazines and just keeping them in a pile... I have decided I will now spend every Sunday afternoon sticking them altogether in my nice big book of inspiration. Quite a nice way to wind down at the end of the working week. :)

Back into After Effects now to sort out those birds wings. :) Hopefully I'll be able to post another Little Leap Forward update this week.

Ron Cheruka - " The Egg Man "

I love paper cuttings and then I discovered these egg cuttings! Made by a man called Ron Cheruka. I have no idea how he makes them but you can apparently go to workshops at his home where he will teach you how to do it. Sounds pretty cool to me :)

Totoro Forest Project

The Totoro Forest Project is a fund raising exhibition/auction to support the non-profit organization, "Totoro No Furusato National Fund". Backed by Hayao Miyazaki it features original artwork by internationally acclaimed artists working in animation, illustration, comic books and fine arts. Even though the exhibition is now closed I believe they will be publishing a book full of all the artwork which I can't wait to get my hands on.

I love the simple design of this website and I highly recommend you check out the gallery and view all the Totoro inspired work.

Day Off! ^-^

Today is my first day off for a very, very, very long time and I am really excited about it! :) I have already planned my day and filled it with fun things to do! :)

I am going to spend this morning entering a couple of festivals, playing a bit of my Wii and then going for my daily walk with my Mum which we decided we should do. Working from home can turn you into a bit of hermit so daily walks are good to clear the cobwebs! :) We have been doing it all this week and I must say I do feel a lot better.

This afternoon I will meet my friend and we are going drawing! this is something I have been desperate to do for ages as my sketchbook hasn't seen much of me recently. I also feel my drawing skills are slowly fading as I am continually on the computer moving key frames around. o_O

Then later this afternoon I am taking my friends kid to see BOLT. I hardly ever go to the cinema as it is just too expensive. I did really want to see the 3D version but at £9.10 just for me to get in I couldn't afford it. :( never mind
Another plus! the new South Park comes out today! so I will be having an animation filled evening. :D Woohoo! bring on time off! ^-^

Seonna Hong

I really love the work by Seonna Hong. These are some of her older pieces of work but there is tons of lovely new stuff to look at on her website.
Not only does she create lovely paintings but she also works as an art director for Nickelodeon and in the past has worked as a background artist at Cartoon Network and Disney. She has even won an Emmy for Individual Achievement in Animation. :)

I have been meaning to blog about her for a while as back in my second year of uni I used one of her images to create a sonic postcard. It was my first After Effects project and my first time recording and mixing my own sound. (You can see it on youtube although the aspect ratio is incorrect and the quality is pretty low - oh the joys of being a noob)

Anyway I will share with you some of my favourite images of hers that have been on my computer for a while and have all been on my desktop at some point in time. :) I particularly love the Snow Angels one.

Her most recent work is actually going to be exhibited next week at a show titled “I Know What You're Thinking...” in New York along with another one of my favourite artists Saelee Oh. I wish I could go....

I also really want to get my hands on her pop up book Animus.

Glasswing Butterfly

I have been finding a lot of really cool stuff recently through one of my favourite subscriptions... the Neatorama blog.

One of the recent posts was about a Glasswing Butterfly. It is beautiful! and so delicate and pretty. I love it. Plus it reminded me of when I had to design the wings for my cut out dragonfly. So I thought I would share.

For more pictures check out the following article at the link.

Little Leap Forward - Tour Dates 2009

If you want to book tickets at one of the venues listed then u can do so here.

LLF Projection Tests

So I have just arrived back from H+B where I met up with Bob, Jonny (technician) and Loz (musician) to look at and test the film and animation sections for the production.

I am extremely happy to say that the projection tests went brilliantly! :) I am really pleased with how everything looked when it was projected. The biggest surprise was that the water background hardly needed any effects added to it as it looked perfect for projection. :)

Here we were trying to get the film to fit on the screen. The main problem we had when I first arrived was that the film was too wide. Because I was working exactly to 720x576 a lot of the film was being cut off the sides. Another problem was that the projector was tilted and positioned quite low down which was skewing the image quite a lot.

We managed to overcome these problems by:
1) Moving the projector higher to decrease the skew
2) Changing the width of the animation and adding black borders down the edge.
The whole thing has been slimmed now and it fits perfectly! hurrah! ^-^

The main section of animation is pretty much completed, all that is left on that section is to tidy up the animation and add all the details. I then need to animate a single bird for the end sequence which will merge with Bob's film. I am looking forward to this as my schedule is a lot less hectic from now onwards. This means I can put all my efforts into finishing it off and perfecting all the tiny details! :)

Martha's Vineyard Film Festival

My graduation film Xiao Xi has recently been selected for screening at The 9th Annual Martha's Vineyard Film Festival taking place on the 13th - 15th March in Chilmark, Massachusetts.
Xiao Xi will be screened on Saturday the 14th at 1:00pm as part of the International Short Films Program '09. I was invited to the festival and would have absolutly loved to go, but sadly I could not afford the travel costs.

You can see the full festival programme at the link.

More paper animation :)

I absolutly love paper animation. :) My obsession with paper is becoming quite a big part of my work. I just want to make things and cut things out of paper all the time! I found this advert for United Airlines on youtube and just loved it! So I thought I would share.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I have had a very busy weekend.
The AMEF workshop went well though and I really enjoyed myself :) Passing on knowledge to younger people feels good! ^-^ Kids these days are so lucky to have access to such powerful computers and software that just wasn't around when I was younger.
I need to get back working on LLF now and finishing off the bird animation for the upcoming projection tests. So far I have added very rough shapes to represent the birds wings before drawing and colouring the final ones. I need to make sure everything is moving correctly before I start all the clean up etc...
But yeah I am feeling a lot better about the bird section now I have gone back and am reworking it all. :)
